I'm still curious as to how "scripts" or whatever automated voting systems work, though.

All "script" means is that a computer is voting instead of a human being.

QUOTE (King-Carey-31 @ Nov 13 2008, 05:14 PM) *
they don't, as of this morning.

That can't be true. There is no way to stop scripts. There are certainly many methods that can make them much harder to write (and that may be what you're referring to), but the way the internet works scripts are always, at least in theory, possible.

For example, with the Rory voting things, the NHL kept updating to try and stop scripts and the script writers kept writing new ones to break them.
Twenty Two
Well, I'm not using a script because I doubt I could get it to work, but I having voted for all the Habs a few times already.

The text messaging is a real piece of cake compared to the site. You just text Canadiens, and it votes for all six of the Habs. I've probably voted for each about 10 times now.

I would love to see Higgy get on that score board. Here's a little something i've been doing. In the write in section i am putting Higgins in all 3 spots along with the id code ....Christopher Higgins [id: 8470274] I dont know if its actually counting all 3 but its not telling me otherwise. Doing the same for Hammer. wink.gif

I hate to break it to you, but you've been doing it wrong sad.gif You have to press the enter button after you paste that code, and if you do, it will tell you the other two times that you've already voted for him. IF you haven't been pressing enter and you haven't seen Chris Higgins face on top, then you haven't been voting for him ...

I've been helping out tho, as I vote for Higgy every time, while alternating between kovy and tanguay (koivu I vote every time, because I RLY want him in)

That's what NHL gets when they let the fans vote

CANADIENS LEAD ALL SIX POSITIONS IN ALL-STAR VOTING

If the first week of fan balloting is any indication, the 2009 NHL All-Star Game could be the first to feature a starting lineup with all six players voted in from one team.

With more than 110,000 votes each, all six Montreal Canadiens on the ballot - goaltender Carey Price, defencemen Andrei Markov and Mike Komisarek and forwards Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev and Alex Tanguay - are the leading vote-getters for all six positions for the Eastern Conference.

Price leads all players on the ballot with 128,642 votes, more than twice the number tallied for goaltender Roberto Luongo (60,958) in the Western Conference.

Saku Koivu (118,329), Alex Kovalev (117,080) and Alex Tanguay (115,828) lead all forwards in votes, with former Canadien-turned-Dallas Star Mike Ribeiro next up with 55,101. By comparison, forwards Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby - the last two Hart Trophy winners - have 35,547 and 25,986 votes respectively.

Montreal's top defensive pairing of Andrei Markov (126,263) and Mike Komisarek (118,202) are also the top pairing among the league's defencemen, with six-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom next at 57,376 votes.

The Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings placed the most players on the ballot with six, followed by five members of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Fans can vote for their favourite players to be in the starting lineups as many times as they want, and for the NHL is providing real-time All-Star fan balloting results online. It marks the third-consecutive year the All-Star balloting process is entirely digital. Fan balloting ends on Jan. 2.

Montreal will host the All-Star weekend in January as part of its year-long Centennial celebration. The 57th NHL All-Star Game will be played at the Bell Centre on Jan. 25.

Montreal last hosted the All-Star Game in 1993 when Patrick Roy was voted in as the lone starter from the Canadiens. He was joined by winger Kirk Muller, who was added as a reserve.
muskeg
Leading all six positions? That's a bit ridiculous. I can see Tanguay, Markov, and maybe Koivu and Price getting a good amount of votes but all 6 starting? It won't happen

Apparently we can't vote more than once a minutes...

It's a good thing there isn't an option for "Does not belong in the All Star Game" or else we would have the fans of 29 other teams voting the Team's candidates down.

I personally don't like all this All Star hype. If you want to set a 'ballot', fine. But, in the end, it should be decided somehow by stats. The comment Price made about trying to vote Habs players in actually made me realize that some of them are actually preoccupied with that stuff.

Imagine if players got onto the All Star team by virtue of merit. Do you think they would be spending any time voting? Probably not. They'd be busting their arses to prove they deserve to be there. It shouldn't be a popularity contest. Or a 'who has fans with more time to spend on the computer clicking buttons' contest, either.

This All Star stuff should not be a concern. There are 2 concerns that matter: 1) Winning; 2) The Stanley Cup.

Here are 2 scenarios to think about.

Scenario A) All six players make the All Star game. By a landslide. But the Team itself goes out early in the Playoffs.

Scenario B.) No players make the All Star game. But the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup in six games over some Western Conference team.

Which would you prefer????
Let's get our priorities in order.

I hope the Team isn't as hung up on this stuff as we Fans are.
tomzilla
lol the two scenarios aren't mutually exclusive. Fans can't help them win. But we can help them make the all stars team. so winning the cup isn't our priority at all.

2 points.

The 1st: where attention goes, energy flows. It's metaphysical, sure, but some studies have proven the effects of things like prayer and the like.

The 2nd: if we would stop ripping our Team apart when they play poorly (which seems to be happening too often of late -- both the playing poorly and the ripping apart pieces), maybe they would lighten up and play looser, which might just help them.

So maybe we can help them on the way to the Cup, after all. smile.gif

That said, you're right. biggrin.gif I had only just come out of tonight's "GameFred" where a lot of negativity abounded. My point was in the end: that I hope the Team itself isn't preoccupied with this All Star stuff. They aren't playing like All Stars and I would hate to see them continue to play like they have been and be rewarded with an 'All Star' status and have it go to their heads.

Much of it was in jest and I did not mean to get in the way of this thread. I would absolutely love to see both scenarios happen.

You still gotta show your support for the boys! That one day you decide not to vote can swing the whole thing...LOL
Miltie01
The NHL itself decided the starting line up should have nothing to do with merit, and everything to do with popularity.
Why should we not stuff the ballot box? Every year players play who shouldn't, and players don't, who should.
axnguyen
Well, even though the boys played a terrible game last night, I'll be spending a good part of my day throwing in votes for them anyways (It's a slow day at work! biggrin.gif )

Koivu - playing great overall.
Tanguay - amazing addition to the team.
Markov - no complaints at all.
Komisarek - near the top of the league in hits, blocked shots.
Kovalev - yes, he can play better, and he WILL play better!
Price - has had a couple of off games, but overall he has been good.

Plus, what better time to make history by completing an entire allstar lineup? The game is in Montreal..let's give the fans who have stuck with this team through their dark years something to remember! It's our 100th season and we deserve it!!
carey31price
All I know that is now that you can only vote once per minute it is pretty much a lock that all six Canadiens are going to make it...Their lead is just too big in order to catch up.

We are a bunch of insane fans. I can't believe the gap that's building up. I wonder if other markets are even aware of the voting system. It's almost like we're the only ones in there. blink.gif

he later says that it also shows the entousiasm of habs fans that wants their 6 players on the starting line up

Okay folks,

We are going to lose thosands of our votes.

Apparetly some Habs fans where using auto voters.. (as we already know)..

The NHL is on to it and the will subtract the votes..

The big question is how many votes do we lose and will we still be on top after?

We need to step up the legal voteing everyone..

Vote 50 times a day at least! Everyday!

No auto votes!!

I dont think many people from other cities will dispute the significance and importance of Montreal to hockey. I consider it the epicenter of it. Some of you fans however are going to destroy what little credibility there is in the "All Star" game. Sure the player selection is all about who is popular but stuffing the ballot boxes isnt a reflection of the popularity.

if you will enjoy your all Hab team, it will be at the price of degrading not only what the All Star game is about, mainly a fun time for ALL hockey fans and not just the host, but also a degradition of the reputation of the fans who stuff those ballot boxes.

I dont blame fans for multi-voting manually. Its the fault of the NHL website that they didnt come up with a good system to stop this. I have only voted once because I think its wrong to vote multiple times.

I am unhappy mainly with the botting that is going on. That is a blatent hack an a brain dead design by the NHL.

I am also concerned about what this will do to the future of the All Star games. The NHL will not let this stand. There will be changes made and I hope its not by taking the vote away from the fans.

I can't see it being a prolonged problem. They know it is occurring so I'm sure you'll see a cut in the numbers when they figure it out.
I think you'll find most fans don't particularly agree with it, also.
AFistFullofFlyer
I have no idea how they will accurately figure out which votes are botted from people manually clicking. My guess is they will throw all the current votes away after they make changes to the site or make a new rule stating that the host of the All Star game fields that cities team against the other NHL all stars.

Possibly IP vs time of submission? If you're getting 500 votes per minute, well you know something wonky is up wink.gif
AFistFullofFlyer
Yes but you could alter your bot to have longer duration between submits or even have this duration randomly created with a floor and ceiling values to simulate someone manually entering in votes. It's a real mess.

True, but if you're going to do it like that why not manually enter them anyway...
I'm sure it's not the first time something like this has happened, prolly won't be the last either.

Koivu, Markov, and Tanguay are the ones that deserve it most right now.

I'm disappointed in Price's play as of late and Kovalev is a no-show at all. Nonetheless, i voted for Price, knowing he can rebound, but Kovalev was subtracted for Ovechkin. Kovalev doesn't deserve all star nomination if this is how he's gonna play (and i KNOW he can play better).

Komisarek has been a letdown all this year so far, I'm hoping he can rebound.
