We need Begin. Correction, we need a healthy Begin. Here's hoping that the back is holding up for the upcoming season!

To me Begin doesn't seem like the same player he was a few years ago. I realize he was out for a good chunk of last season, but when he was out there he just didn't seem the same.
Perhaps he has nagging injuries or maybe it was just the overall chemestry of the team, who knows.

I'd like to see him have a great season this year, stay healthy, give us the spark we need, be a monster on the PK and work the corners hard. That's the Begin I always liked.

Here's to a new season and to a healthy Begin.

Here's hoping he can remain healthy. That'll be the key to performing like he did in '05-06.

Last year he had a pretty drawn out injury (his back or ribs? can't quite remember). For a guy who's strengths are speed and throwing the body, any injury to the core or the legs is going to have a major effect on a player's playing style.

If his knees, back and ribs can hold up this year, I'm sure we'll all be pleased (based on the role he'll be playing with the team).

He is soooo lucky that the refs sent Brind'Amour off with him on that penalty or he might have cost us last nights game with that bone head hit from behind.
I'm not really sure why Brind'Amour was sent off, so Begin should count his blessings and use his head.

I agree if that was the other way around we would be screaming bloody murder!! Very lucky Steve/ He seems pumped, but when will he learn about hits from behind?

he really was lucky that time and it wasnt exactly the most opportune time to be doing something like that, but nevertheless he wasnt the only guy penalizes so therefore he did his job excellent! thats what his job is, if he can keep doing that without getting penalties than he truly is helping this team win because without brind'amour, the canes are not the same team at all. he brings alot to that team.

Nevertheless he was lucky not to get a penalty for hitting from behind... it did seem though that Williams did go down rather easy.

Bang-Bang as I liked to call him can still be an effective player and I like him a lot... that said, I do wonder if someone better could be waiting in the wings (D'Agostini? Lahti?) to take his spot... we'll have to wait and see.

Not the same player this year right now, his hits are more ill-timed than anything else, he's not crushing people into the boards like the Begin of 05-06, the Begin that put the fear of God into whoever was unlucky enough to be a target when he jumped over the boards for a shift. I don't know, something is missing here, and the fact that he doesn't seem willing to fight is further lowering his value. C'mon, Steve, get your mojo goin' and become Bang Bang Begin again!

How can a player who is 22 or 25 or 27, and who was just eliminated from the playoffs be tired? Tired is a miner who works in a damp pit in Miktivka, in the Donetsk Plateau in Ukraine, who never sees daylight and who provides living for a family of five in a modest two-room apartment. That is tired.

Tired is a divorced mother with two young kids who double shifts as a nurse assistant and cleaning lady to make ends meet.

I'm listening to Team990 now...and Tony and PJ are talking about Begin being benched for tonight. They are comparing Steve's situation to Rivet's from last season.

Benching one of your motivational leaders at the last minute...is this going to change Steve's attitutde, aside from not letting this ever happen again? Could Steve shoulder away Carbo?

Apperently Steve only found out he wasn't playing this very morning when he walked into the locker room. He looked at the line-up board, and his name wasn't on it.

Also Tony said that Carbo and Steve were going to have a private talk after practice today.

I suppose a private talk to explain that there are 23 players on this team and that only 20 can dress? I luv bégin and what he can contribute but seriously, it doesn't really matter if the second half of the roster is rotated for whatever reason. I dont think Bégin is being punished and benched, I think rather that Murray is given a chance to play one game. Not sure if I express correctly that there's a difference in perspective between the two.

So, if the coach wants to play all his 23 guys, inevitably, there will be healthy scratches. Some will argue that the someone who should have stepped down for tonight's game is Kostopoulos, others would have said Dandenault. Fair enough. I think their turn will come too. It's not that they dont play well and dont meet expectations, it's that they dont play better and dont exceed expection more than the other guy.

My 2 cents

sometimes carbo's decisions baffle me. come on. the benching did NOT work for rivet why would he assume differently with begin. mistake to bench him imho. he could play better sure, but three games into the season so could a few players. lats' benching fine. what has komisarek done to impress anyone? ridiculous.

Well Begin is surprised he's benched and has no idea what he did wrong.

I just hope management doesn't pull a Rivet situation with him.

Is it Begin getting benched or Koivu? By the media's reaction and some fans, I can't tell the difference. Seriously though, Begin, Murray, Dandenault, Kostopoulos, Latendresse, Chipchura, at this stage in their career, they're all interchangeable, and if Lapierre is called up, he's also in the same boat. You have to expect at least 2 of them to be scratched every game! I like Steve as much as the guy next door, but he's not playing the way he was in past years, whether it's injuries (his back?) or age taking its toll. We need the spark plug back.
